Cook

I have been the cook at Unity School, a vegetarian preschool, for over 11 years. In this role, I have had the privilege of supporting the school's commitment to promoting healthy eating habits among young children.

Unity School, governed by USDA guidelines, focuses on providing well-balanced meals made with fresh, wholesome ingredients. It's incredibly rewarding to align my passion for nourishing food with the school's mission to help children develop lifelong healthy eating practices.

Fresh, locally sourced vegetables and other nutrient-dense ingredients are at the core of my cooking. I love incorporating a variety of colorful produce into the daily menus to ensure the children experience a wide range of flavors and nutrients. From hearty vegetable soups to vibrant salads and whole-grain casseroles, I take pride in creating meals that are as delicious as they are nutritious. Knowing these meals fuel growing bodies while exciting young palates is one of the best parts of my job.

I am always looking for new ways to grow and improve as a vegetarian cook, whether it's experimenting with recipes or incorporating seasonal ingredients. I love finding creative ways to keep the meals exciting and educational. Good nutrition is so important, and I'm proud to help children build positive relationships with food that I hope will stay with them for a lifetime.

Assistant

Hello, I’m Sarah! I started my 12th year here at Unity School in September. Working with children has been my passion since 1995, and I feel so fortunate to help guide young learners as they grow and prepare for kindergarten.

After high school, I completed a nine-month Child Development program through International Correspondence School and earned a diploma of completion. I also hold an associate’s degree in Human Services from Lane Community College.

Outside the classroom, I love exploring my creative side through drawing and writing. I’ve even designed journals and coloring books, and I hope to create more as I can.

For the past seven years, I’ve been part of the Butterfly Class, where I enjoy watching my young friends discover their talents, build confidence, and embrace their creativity. This year, we’ve had a blast using our imagination, playing with connector cows, sketching pizza trucks, and designing everything from homes to restaurants during playtime. Their imagination and cleverness inspire me daily!

Sharing my life with my family, and “young friends” at Unity brings me joy. I’m grateful for every opportunity to play, learn, and grow alongside these amazing children during such a special time in their lives.

Meals

Unity serves breakfast, two snacks, and lunch daily. Weekly menus are posted on the bulletin board by the front office. Please check the daily schedule in your child’s classroom for mealtimes. Our food program is provided at no additional charge to parents. We provide high-quality meals using beans, cheese, eggs, and nuts as protein sources. We serve low-sugar, homemade snacks, whole grain breads, and fresh vegetables and fruits as often as possible. As part of our health curriculum, each class learns about healthy foods, which is reinforced daily during meal times.

We receive funds from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to assist with our meal program costs. This program also supports meal programs in public schools. Our meals must meet USDA standards for the types and quantities of foods included. We expect all children to participate in the program. We request that you do not send a box lunch, snacks, or other foods with your child.

We enjoy family-style dining, allowing children to help themselves from serving bowls. The staff joins the children at the table, demonstrating healthy eating habits by consuming all the nutritious food provided and encouraging the children to follow suit. Seconds are offered. The children clear their own dishes into the bus tubs, scraping leftovers for compost and disposing of paper products in the waste basket.
