Our Mission Statement

It is our dream that children who pass through Unity School will, through play and discovery, be encouraged to reach their unique and individual potentials, take with them the wisdom to live a healthful life, always opt for a peaceful way to solve their problems and weave who they are and the skills they have learned here into positive solutions for our community and our planet.

Who We are

Unity is a non-profit school serving families in Lane County for over 50 years. We started as a small cooperative preschool in 1974 and have settled permanently at 580 N. Garden Way, an old farmhouse built in 1928, sitting on almost an acre of land in the heart of the city. The program that developed over the years has focused on collaborative, peaceful, child-centered education and care in a beautiful natural setting.

We use HighScope, an inclusive, research-based, active, participatory, play-based curriculum that targets the eight categories of learning.

At Unity School, one of our core values is the significance of diversity, equity, and inclusion within our programs which we enact through culturally responsive and equitable education for all children.

The Unity community wants to learn about your family’s culture and identity as we believe these are essential components of early childhood development. It is important to us to reflect our children and families in the classroom, as representation matters.

We recognize the crucial need to provide all children, especially those who are vulnerable, with the opportunity to thrive in a stable, kind, and loving environment. Our goal is to offer an equitable curriculum and education that caters to all developmental stages, disabilities, and challenges. We are aware of the preschool-to-prison pipeline and strive to create a safe and stable atmosphere to help disrupt this cycle.

Guided by our mission statement, we understand that creating secure spaces for children to receive the education they deserve ultimately helps develop kind and loving adults in our community. Our commitment to the philosophies of “kids do well if they can” and “every child belongs” means meeting children where they are is incredibly important.

At Unity, we aim to go above and beyond by collaborating with local organizations to secure resources and provide on-campus support. We provide trauma-informed care training and offer in-person coaching and modeling for our teachers. We are dedicated to being family-focused and want our families to know that we are here to assist them with resources. You can find more information on our Parent & Family Resource Page

Learn & Play

At Unity School, children learn and play in various settings: in their welcoming classroom, where they engage in open-ended activities for hands-on learning. In a wonderful play yard, which features large old trees, a grapevine-shaded sandbox, a ‘wild’ hill among the shrubs, and plenty of space to run, play, and imagine. In the big organic garden, where they learn how to plant and harvest, or work in small group doing creative lessons centered around plants and the outdoor elements.

We go outside come rain or shine, but on days when the weather isn't permitting out door play, they have the opportunity to go into the big barn to jump, run, and release their energy.

The children also take turns caring for the many pets at Unity.

Children learn through every moment of their day.
